Margot Ger: Head of Broadcast and Content Production

We are continuing to celebrate women in advertising even as International Women’s Day is in the past and Women’s Month is coming to a close. We recently spoke with Margot Ger, Head of Broadcast and Content Production at TBWA Australia. Margot has been in agency production since the start of her career and is pleased that it is a female-friendly sector.

So tell us how you got your start?

MG: I began my career in South Africa where thanks to a ‘lucky break’ landed a role as a production assistant in the newly launched TV Production department at Ogilvy & Mather, South Africa (VZ). At the time, I had graduated university and was really seeking an artistic or creative role. I didn’t know exactly what the role of a production assistant involved, but I knew I wanted it. I quickly learnt a lot, accepted advice from senior producers and the rest, as they say, is history.

What brought you from South Africa to Australia?

MG: Well, I have never been afraid of change. A family decision was the impetus for me to leave my job in South Africa and pursue a new life and career in Australia. I collected recommendations from leaders in this industry and in hand, landed a job as a senior producer at TBWA, while still in my 20s. Over time I have adapted to the internal and external changes and advanced to the Head of TV. The scope and responsibilities of the role continue to expand as market demands shift, and it energizes and drives me forward.

How do you adapt to all the changes?

MG: Well, I feel that agency production requires a high degree of multitasking in the form of juggling creative, technical and business issues across multiple projects – all on tight deadlines. I think my ability to understand the importance of a changing marketplace as it relates to the creation of relevant content and an expanding number of delivery channels is part of what keeps me engaged. I appreciate the positive morale and flexibility of my workplace and believe that it trickles down from the top. I have worked hard to earn a high degree of trust and respect from colleagues at all levels and I think it has a lot to do with my work ethic, confidence and curiosity. I am very proud to help mentor others in the industry – those who show initiative and aptitude and those with high energy and enthusiasm, like myself.

Margot has had a passion for creative work in agencies since the beginning of her career and continued to grow in the industry ever since. Her advice for young women entering the workplace: “Be open to learning and taking advice from those with experience. Believe in yourself and step forward with courage.”
